Back of Book:

Celaena Sardothien is the king’s Champion―yet she is far from loyal to the crown, for the man she serves is bent on evil. But working against her master in secret is no easy task. As Celaena tries to untangle the mysteries buried within the glass castle, she can trust no one, not even her supposed allies Crown Prince Dorian, Captain of the Guard Chaol, and foreign princess Nehemia.

Then, an unspeakable tragedy shatters Celaena’s world. She must decide once and for all where her loyalties lie . . . and whom she will fight for.

An action-packed and romantic adventure that readers “will never want to leave” (Kirkus Reviews), the next chapter in this smash hit New York Timesbest-selling series is sure to please Sarah Maas’s enormous and ever-growing fan-base–and to set the stage for an explosive third book.

Thanks for traveling over to my review of Crown of Midnight, SORRY THIS IS SO LATE!

I’ve been working at an event all last week called FallWeekend @ 242 Community Church. It was awesome. Everything was awesome. I loved it. Serving Jesus is awesome.

I did finish Crown of Midnight though!! And I have a great many things to say!

1st. Characters

Dorian

tog2pring1
(i made dis)

NOT ENOUGH DORIAN! Idk, that’s just what I felt. I mean yes he was in it and boy did he have his big moments. But I feel like the funny light hearted Dorian I met in book one wasn’t as prominent. But it’s a small micro detail because I really did love the character development of him, growing into his role as an heir and taking things so much more seriously. He’s probably my favorite character and I absolutely loved the conversation between him and Nehemia.

Chaol.

What a guy–he’s really trying. I was honestly surprised to see him and Celaena get together so quickly. I mean I was like okay, but it’s only book two. I kinda wanted to see that tension burn a little while longer but that’s just me. I respect Chaol though. He does what he has to even when it’s remarkably hard. It’s not easy to do that at all!

Celaena.

Celaena, I love you, but sometimes I smack my head when I watch you. There were quite a few moments where I was like come on girl, get it together and figure this out! Like the shadows and the headaches, that took her forever to put two and two together. As soon as shadows occurred more than once I was ready to dig into it and figure it out but it took like five occurring of shadows and headaches for Celaena to be like, ‘oh this might be worth looking into.’ (And at that rate, she’s barely looked into it!) Or times when she was walking into a dumb situation without backup, (the library basement you know what I’m talking about.) But I get it, if you think from her perspective, it makes sense, she’s surrounded by the people who murdered her family so trust is a bit of an uphill battle.

There was one instance that broke my connection as a reader, but…

Top Ten Tuesday: Characters I’d dress up as for Halloween

I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited for Halloween as I am this year. Growing up, I always struggled with picking a costume. I wanted it to be cool and unique and I always put way to much thought in it and panicked

8cmsuLZand my mom would have to come in and save the day (or tell me to stop being ridiculous and just put something on.)

But this year.

This year is different.

I’ve got the perfect costume (sort of. Still have to get some parts like the costume itself.)

But that’s aside the point, all this costume thinking and planning made me think, what a great idea for a Top Ten Tuesday topic (originally hosted by Broke and the Bookish)!  Top Ten Halloween Costumes (if you could pick Anything)!!! Now, not all these are entirely plausible…but that’s the point!

And, like I said. What (who) I’m actually going as this year is not in the list! But if you can guess it, you’ll win a prize (see below!)

10.  UBABA

Spirited-Away-spirited-away-4378058-852-480

Now, I know, it’s far out and I’m not even the right gender, but I think we can all agree Yubaba is fricken awesome and to be her for a night would be pretty sweet.

9. Jake the Dog OR Finn the Human

adventure-time-screensaver_1I used to be a huge fan of Adventure Time, haven’t watched the show in forever but how cool would it be to be one of them?!?!

8. Ash Ketchum

AshanimeI love Pokémon. So much. So freaking much. Like Pokemon Go–I can’t wait for that! And when I say Ash Ketchum, I truly mean a Pokemon Trainer. This technically would be my number one, but I would want this for life, not just for one day.

7. Howl

Howl-5Following in the same Hayao Miyazaki vain, I think it’d be fun to be Howl for a night. Transforming into a bird at will, how cool would that be. (Which, odd connection now that I think about it. Yubaba can turn into a bird, and Howl can turn into a bird, and they both have magic….so does that mean Yubaba and Howl are…related??????       !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?)

6. Dorian Havilliard

I would have liked for this to be all book characters, but I felt like too many of them would have come from the Throne of Glass series. Sarah J. Maas, you’re incredible. Being Dorian for a day would be a crazy experience, especially with magic…

5. Mace Windu

Mace_Windu

Jedi Master. All that needs to be said. Him or Yoda or Obi-Won would be great. For life. And oh yeah Starwars Seven.

4. Hiccup, with Toothless of course…

dragon-2-hiccup-toothless

Dragon Rider and best friend of the best dragon ever. I’ll take that. Seriously, if you haven’t seen How to Train Your Dragon, do yourself a favor and canceal your plans for the evening because you need to experience greatness.

3. Yerowslii

Yerowsli

Call it what you will, maybe a little bit of shameless Water Travelers promotion, but I would love to be Yerowslii for a while. Just playing with magic, drinking tea, making dumb jokes, and being carefree for a night, while possessing an incredible amount of knowledge and power–I think it would be great! (note this picture is from Yerowslii’s official twitter @KoU_Yerowslii. Yes. Yes. That is Christoph Waltz with a longer beard. You can follow each characters twitter if you’d like Aaron: @Aaron_Archien, Madi: @Madalyne_Harper, Ugine: @Ugine_Captain, and The Upitar Herald for Upitar related stuff @UpitarHerald. They’re tweets are mostly about their day-to-day activities and such!)

2. Legolas

tumblr_m8s532iujo1r9rzpio1_500130308093303895096

he’s just a badass.

And my hair is pretty long now so…….

1. SPACE PIRATE WIZARD!

It’s the all in one package!!!!! I would get a sword, magic and, AND, A FLYING PIRATE SHIP IN SPACE!

It would be, the greatest thing ever for a night.

the-martian-surprise-teaser tumblr_inline_nwfcp0WhIr1rs3vpi_500

Those would be my top ten! BUT. The only one that’s missing is WHO I’m ACTUALLY going as!

If you can guess it, I’ll send you a signed letter from me that says how freaking awesome you are!

If You’re A Scared-y Cat Bookworm, Here Are Ten Halloween Reads For You! | Top Ten Tuesday

Josies Book Corner

top-ten-halloween-reads

It’s no secret that I’m a scaredy cat. I’ll read one freaky scene in a novel and for the rest of the night I’ll be so paranoid I won’t be able to get up to go to the toilet. I’ll enjoy the entirety of a horror movie, only to be kept up all night afterwards due to my own paranoia.
So what does this mean for me? It means I cross out all possibility of me ever reading books within the thriller and horror genre. (To give you all some perspective on how bad it is, I freaked out reading The Accident Season and it was only at the very beginning of the novel!)
And I can’t be the only one (right?). Of course not! So, as Halloween is approaching and every other bookworm is getting hyped up for their freaky horror reads, we scaredy cat bookworms are preparing to…

POLLYANNA – CHAPTER ONE

I’ve been working on some side stories, some short stories and just some random writing stuff on top of The Water Travelers series and was challenged to share some of that. I can’t say where these stories will go, which ones will continue and which ones will be discarded, but feel free to say what you think!

This first one is planned to be a full length novel but is definitely definitely in it’s early stages! You may also notice it’s not in my typical writing style. (Yay for trying new things)

ALSO, I apologize about the wordpress formatting (damn you wordpress.) You can read an easier version HERE.

POLLYANNA

CHAPTER 1 – END OF FIRST SEMESTER

“Its been six months. Six long, terrible terrible months. And nothings happened. No ones done anything. Nothings moving and—no one seems much different. When your body melts away as the world continues spinning aimlessly throughout the cosmos, you need to change something.”
That’s what he said to me. Two days after I got back from Gorisee, that’s what Arther said to me.

Everyone one of us has been challenged in some way to do something different and make something of themselves. It kind of sucks, though. It’s more of burden rather than a calling. I guess maybe that’s how we see it sometimes—always looking at circumstances from the end of the wand instead of from where it rests peacefully in the center of our palm. Here we are, casting spells and making things blow up or morph or change and yet, most of us, feel like we don’t even have the power to get ready in the morning let alone fight the darkness that’s in the world.
Magic came easy for a lot of us. ‘Naturally gifted’ people would say with wide eyes as we were showered with attention at a young age. Our parents would boast about with adoration with words such as, ‘my girl’s so talented. I’ve just never seen anyone like her,’ and, of course, we would all roll the eyes inside our hearts and shrug.
Yet we loved the comments. We thrived off of praise and wanting to be special.
And we were. We all were. Until we came here.
To the lovely home of the most fantastic place in the entire world, only for those who are ‘specially gifted’, Ribbawhin: College For Those with Remarkable Abilities.
First day in my primary professor started class by saying none of us should actually be here. We’re all a bunch of worthless, pretentious, money pinching prince and princesses who think we’re special because we can snap our fingers and make things change colors.
I’m glad I decided to move one seat to the left because after that statement the professor, Sir Alinof Vonkswitz, shot a straight line of electricity—something incredibly hard to do—right at the chest of the boy who took my original seat. It didn’t kill him but I don’t think the chap heard what was said after that, “Pay attention to the energy in a room! You can always feel it building—fluctuating—settling!”
The boy fell on the floor quivering, electricity still sparking around him. “Aww. Did somebody get hurt. Did mummy never put her fingers against your sweet wittle baby skin.” He fired another jolt and mumbled, ‘Worthless magic sack.’
The rest of that lecture was pretty nerve-racking.

So yeah. That was day one. Day’s two and three and four didn’t go much better, and our weekend partying was interrupted by a gang of professors blowing the barn behind our dorms apart. They said it was part of the teaching lesson—being prepared and sensing the area—but none of us believed that.
The Headmaster frowned at it but none of us know the words that were exchanged between faculty and superiors.

Anyways, here we are. Six monthsish in. Hating our lives but more so hating ourselves. But, for all the smack I give it, I do love this place. Sort of. It’s a weird love. Our professors aren’t all that bad. I mean Dr. Omibgo was pretty unorthodox in his potion teaching class, frequently giving us the wrong combination of ingredients so it would blow up and so we’d know never ever us that. But that only prepared us for advanced potion making, where one error would really blow up, killing most of us near it. And now he often takes us out for nature walks where he picks plants with us and does funny things like licking tree bark and talking to insects. He’s turned out to be a swell old man.
And others, like our physicality professor, Mr. Wugwits—he’s brutally hard on our workouts but I’ve never been able to deflect a double firestorm before his lessons (let alone had a skilled magician used one on me.)
And professors like Annamarri. She smacked a kid so hard one week that his neck actually broke. She responded faster than anyone I’ve ever seen in using a Perma Healing spell to keep him alive in the split second he had before dying. But, instead of just wasting a moment, then, right there, she actually showed us how to unbreak a bone using a Perma Restore spell.
I’m skeptical that it may have been part of the lesson but he’s been afraid around her since and has never called anyone a Magwhater since.
And there are others but … (CLICK TO KEEP READING ON SITE)

Help Rachel help kids!

Rachel’s a blogging friend of mine and she’s trying to raise $300.00 for a charity program called Extra Life. The charity involves playing video games to raise money for kids with terrible sucky illnesses. How cool is that, ‘extra-life’, get it, like in a video game when you get an extra life! It’s the little things.

Rachel herself has Cerebral Palsy, “and because of it I know how it sucks to be a kid and be stuck in the hospital.”

Any little dollar counts to helping out some kids so check her out!

A New Day

This is gonna be more relevant to my friends who are followers of Christ, but still applicable to those who are not.

I was ruminating over the idea of a single day.

I feel like as people, we often forget the impact and power of one day. Because a day is combined with two-four others (usually) which is then bundled as a week, which then is quickly accumulate into a month and before we know it another year has gone by. Yes, time flies, that’s inevitable. But just letting time fly by isn’t.

The mentality of just having to make it through another year to get where we want to be seems to be the mentality that consumes our culture. People dread the idea of tomorrow morning because it means they have to go through another day. What if the mentality of ‘I just have to make it through another year to get where we want to be’ doesn’t have to be a mentality? What if the negative mentality of another day, didn’t have to be a negative mentality?

I wonder, do you think God just sits up there and is like,”If we can just make it through December, we’ll be okay. Fingers crossed.” Or is he like, “Oh, geese, look at that–another day is coming up. Good to see the sun is still on que.” Like, does God lose track of the days like we do? Is he like “October? That happened already? Crap, didn’t even pick out a costume, again.”

Although the answers to those question are usually simple–are they? If we know the answers why do we act as though God doesn’t care about today?

I don’t see anywhere in the bible God forgetting to plan. I don’t see a day sneaking up on our God like we let weeks sneak past our lives. And I don’t see God letting days just slip from his grasp.

I don’t think to God a day, is just another day.

And, although that may sound like a disciplinary statement, or a ‘come on we need to do better’ conviction–like we’re terrible Christians who don’t love Jesus enough or something–It’s not at all.

I see this as a joy. God makes everyday–he has a plan for Every Day.

Whether we have one or not, he does. We just need to open our eyes to the reality of that, and by simple doing so–we get the joy of being apart of today–of every day.

A day doesn’t go to waist for God. Even a day of resting and relaxing, isn’t a waisted day for God. He is moving and active in everyday, that’s whether we’re taking the day off or working diligently, we are apart of that day. That mission. That plan. That story of love.

It’s pretty exciting. That’s a good day. It’s a day the Lord has made;
a day we get to rejoice and be glad in.

It’s a new day. God has plan. Everyday.

Today is the day the Lord has made, who knows what he has in store.

God made today. God made tomorrow. And God did it with a plan. He’s on top of his universe like that.
